Welcome to Year 2!

Classroom pictures for website 009

Year 2 is a very important year for us as we get ready of the end of year tests and prepare for moving up into KS2.

We do most of our work in our books, but with lots of practical actvivites to help us understand tricky learning.

Our learning is through Learning Challenge questions and we have a number of questions which we investigate over the year. This year our questions are:

  • What were the people who lived here like a 100 years ago? Or What was it like when the Queen came to the throne in 1953?
  • Where would you prefer to live: England or Africa?
  • What would Ben Ten/Dora the Explorer find exciting about Oldham?
  • How have Rosa Parks and Nelson Mandela helped to make the world a better place?
  • Why do we love to be beside the seaside?

In English, we will be learning how to write stories and how we can make them interesting and exciting to read. We will  be learning how to write our own instructions about things, and will also learn how to write non-chronological reports.

In maths we will be focussing on addition, subtraction and place value and will be learning about these concepts by having lots of fun with numbers! We will also be looking at multiplication and division and we will be solving problems using all 4 operations.  We will learn avbout shape and measure as well as learning how to draw simple block graphs and how to answer questions using them.

We have PE on a Tuesday and dance on a Friday.

In Year 2, our day starts at 8.50am. We have our lunch at 12.00pm and then play out after we have eaten until 12.50pm. Our day finishes at 3.05pm.

Our class teacher is called Miss Clifford.

Science

In Science, we have been looking at materials. As a class, we have looked at and discussed natural materials like wood, stone, chalk and wool and also man-made materials like plastic, paper and glass. We discussed the differences between man-made and natural materials and how the original material is changed to become a man-made material. For example, sand into glass and wood into paper. We then made pictures out of only natural materials and then only man-made materials (mainly different types of paper and card) and you can see some of these below.
